What the casino's edge is in six-to-five blackjack

Blackjack can be close to an even-money proposition when the rules are favourable and every decision follows basic strategy. Six-to-five changes that calculation: a natural blackjack pays only 1.2 times the stake instead of 1.5, giving the casino a larger expected advantage.

The house edge is the casino’s expected profit as a percentage of the amount wagered. It is not a fee deducted from the felt, nor does it guarantee a loss on each hand. Its size depends on payout, deck, dealer decisions, splitting, doubling and other rules, so no single percentage fits every Australian venue.

3:2 and 6:5 compared

For a $100 natural blackjack, 3:2 returns $250 including the stake, while 6:5 returns $220. The lower payment applies only to a natural 21; ordinary winning hands still pay even money.

Measure 3:2 blackjack 6:5 blackjack
Profit on a $100 natural $150 $120
Total amount returned $250 $220
Indicative multi-deck house edge about 0.4–0.8% about 1.3–2.0%
Player strategy Use a 3:2 strategy chart Use a rules-specific 6:5 chart
Main consequence Smaller built-in disadvantage Roughly another percentage point of edge

These are broad ranges, not quotes from every venue. A representative multi-deck game might have roughly 0.5% edge at 3:2 and 1.6% at 6:5. Claims that casino games always lose exactly five percent are too crude; the five-percent myth explains why payout and rules must be considered together.

Why the smaller blackjack payout costs more

The damage becomes clearer through expected value. A blackjack occurs on roughly one in 20 initial hands, depending on the number of decks and other rules. Reducing profit by $30 on that event may seem small because it happens infrequently, but probability-weighted, it removes a substantial slice of the game’s expected return.

The house edge does not mean a player loses $16 on every $1,000 of action. Variance can produce wins or long losing runs; over enough decisions, a sound player strategy loses a smaller expected amount than the same strategy at 3:2. Changing from 3:2 to 6:5 can add roughly one percentage point or more to that long-run cost.

Rules that can move the percentage

Six-to-five is only the starting point. A single-deck game with the dealer standing on soft 17 and restricted doubling can differ from a multi-deck shoe where the dealer hits soft 17 and double after split is allowed. Number of decks, resplitting, splitting aces, late or early surrender and peek or hole-card rules all affect expected return.

Insurance and side bets are separate wagers and often carry far larger disadvantages than the base game. A variant labelled blackjack may change more than the natural payout, so every line of the posted rules matters. In Australia, the state or territory gaming regulator oversees the licensed venue, but the rules placard determines the mathematical game being played.

Strategy must follow the payout

Basic strategy must match the exact rules. A 3:2 strategy card can lose value at 6:5 because the game’s incentives have changed. For example, many 3:2 charts split tens, whereas many 6:5 charts do not; doubles on other hands can also move. Use a chart labelled for six-to-five and the venue’s deck and dealer rules.

Headline odds also need probability context. An examination of the odds of seven shows why a stated payout means little without the event’s chance and payoff rules. The same reading applies to insurance, pairs and other blackjack side wagers, which should be judged on expected value rather than excitement.

No strategy removes the house edge. It can reduce the disadvantage when the rules and choices align, but chasing, martingale progressions and increasing stakes after losses can turn a manageable mathematical edge into a rapid bankroll loss. Fixed betting units and predetermined stop points are more defensible.

Bonuses and the Australian casino market

Promotions should be assessed separately from the blackjack game. A practical guide to 20x wagering bonus basics shows how turnover conditions can consume promotional credit many times over. If only selected games count, blackjack may contribute little or nothing. A large headline offer cannot repair the mathematical disadvantage of the 6:5 payout.

Australian players should also check who is offering the game. The federal Interactive Gambling Act 2001 restricts unlicensed offshore gambling services from targeting Australians, while state and territory regulators authorise local operators and venues. ACMA can pursue blocking measures against unauthorised offshore casino sites, so an advertisement in Australian dollars is not proof of approval.

Local habits matter. In Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, casino visits are often part of an evening’s entertainment, and recreational budgets may be framed in round amounts such as A$20 or A$50. In many pubs and clubs, poker machines and TAB products are more familiar than blackjack, table minimums vary, and some venues do not deal the game at all.

Make the next session deliberate

Before the first hand, check whether the venue pays 3:2 or 6:5, then confirm the soft-17, doubling and splitting rules. Select a game you understand, use the matching basic-strategy chart, and set both a cash limit and a time limit before betting. Treat any bonus as a bonus with terms, not money to chase.

Make the next session an informed decision rather than an attempt to defeat a fixed mathematical margin. Stay within your limits, never borrow to play, and leave when either limit is reached.
