How to calculate red or black odds in roulette

If you are learning how to calculate the odds of red or black in roulette, start with a simple fact: a standard wheel contains 18 red pockets, 18 black pockets and one or two green pockets. The colour wager looks balanced, but the green pocket—or both green pockets—creates the house advantage. A correct calculation therefore depends on the wheel layout, the payout and any special rules attached to even-money bets.

It also helps to separate probability from payout. Probability tells you how often a result should occur over a long run; the payout tells you what you receive when it does. Neither guarantees the next spin because each roulette outcome is independent. These calculations are most useful for comparing games and budgeting, not for predicting a streak.

Start with the pockets

Count the total equally likely pockets. On a single-zero wheel, there are 37 outcomes: numbers 1 to 36 plus 0. The calculation for either colour is favourable pockets divided by total pockets: 18 ÷ 37. That equals approximately 48.65%. The probability of losing is 19 ÷ 37, or approximately 51.35%, because the zero loses both a red and a black wager.

On a double-zero wheel, there are 38 outcomes because both 0 and 00 are present. The numerator remains 18, but 18 ÷ 38 is approximately 47.37%. The chance of losing is 20 ÷ 38, or 52.63%. In odds-against form, red is 19:18 on a single-zero wheel and 10:9 on a double-zero wheel; those ratios describe the same probabilities without decimals.

A straight-up wager on number three follows a different calculation; the odds on number three show how the pocket count changes its probability. By contrast, every red or black wager has exactly 18 winning pockets. The wheel format is therefore the decisive variable, rather than the colour chosen or the amount staked.

Compare wheel layouts

Here is the core comparison for a standard even-money bet paying 1:1:

Measure Single-zero wheel Double-zero wheel
Total pockets 37 38
Winning pockets 18 18
Win probability 18/37 = 48.65% 18/38 = 47.37%
Loss probability 19/37 = 51.35% 20/38 = 52.63%
House edge 1/37 = 2.70% 1/19 = 5.26%
Expected return 36/37 = 97.30% 18/19 = 94.74%

Although the payouts are identical, the expected return is not. An A$10 bet returns A$10 in net profit when red wins and loses A$10 when it does not. Its expected result is 0.4865 × A$10 minus 0.5135 × A$10, which is approximately –A$0.27 per bet on a single-zero wheel. On a double-zero wheel, the expected result is approximately –A$0.53. These are long-run averages, not fixed losses on every spin.

Convert probability into expected value

For a quick expected-value check, multiply the probability of winning by the profit on a win, then subtract the probability of losing multiplied by the stake. For an even-money bet of S, expected value is P(win) × S − P(loss) × S. When P(win) is 18/37, this simplifies to –S/37. When it is 18/38, it simplifies to –S/19.

That edge is game-specific. Blackjack, for example, changes under rules such as the soft 17 rule, while roulette prices its uncertainty through the wheel layout and any special even-money rules. A single-zero roulette game offering en prison or La Partage on a zero can reduce the effective loss on an even-money wager, so read the house rules rather than assuming every green-zero wheel has the same economics.

Account for Australian rules and venues

Australian players should check the actual game before staking. In Sydney and Melbourne, roulette is generally found in licensed destination casinos rather than neighbourhood pubs, where pokies are the more familiar gaming format. In other states and territories, the range of venues and games also varies. Look for the wheel configuration, minimum stake, permitted even-money rules and payout placard near the layout.

Legal boundaries matter as much as the wheel. Under the federal Interactive Gambling Act 2001, real-money online casino-style games are prohibited. Separate licensed lottery and sports-betting products operate under state and territory frameworks, while the Australian Communications and Media Authority and local gaming regulators oversee their respective areas. An offshore roulette website is not a licensed Australian online casino, even if it accepts Australian dollars.

Most destination casinos require players to be at least 18 and to show identification. Promotional credits or loyalty rewards do not remove the mathematical edge. Likewise, a run of ten reds does not make black due; the next spin retains the same wheel probabilities. Lotto habits, betting apps and casino visits may sit within the same entertainment budget, which is why tracking them together can reveal more spending than expected.

Use a plan that protects your bankroll

Set a session limit in Australian dollars and decide it before play. Choose a licensed venue, keep a simple record of deposits, withdrawals and net results, and use a time reminder as well as a cash limit. A loss-chasing rule is useful: once the preset loss is reached, stop and do not attempt to recover it through a larger stake. Roulette systems can change bet patterns, but they cannot change the number of pockets.

Use the formulas to compare a single-zero wheel with a double-zero wheel, check the posted payout and calculate your expected cost before placing a red or black wager.
